Today in school the teachers had a program prepared for the kids and by the kids. We watched a slide show of some pictures of the flag with a patriotic song playing in the back ground. After that Mr. Hammond's 2nd grade class sang "I'm Proud to be an American". Tears started to burn in my eyes as I listened to the sweet innocent voices sing this song. As the song progressed a small girl started to cry. The aide for her class went and got her and she asked the child "Honey, what's wrong?", with tears streaming down her face she said "My brother is in Iraq". As I watched this woman comfort this child I have never been so grateful to the people that fight to protect this great country. I know that it is by their sacrifice that we are able to enjoy so many of the freedoms that we have. Our country may not be perfect, maybe far from it, but I am so proud to call this place my home. I read a quote by Anne Frank that says "Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy". I believe that this is what all of us need to do; realize that there is still good in the world and that we need to fight to keep it that way. I am so thankful for those that have come before me and not only fought to protect my country, but have fought to keep the beauty in it alive.
